Desktop & Laptop Email - Choose your setup

Not sure which email option to use on your computer? Choose what best matches how you work:

Fastest option (no setup)

Use Webmail (works on any computer):
Webmail (Seren Web)
Ideal if you are travelling, using a shared computer, or just want quick access.

Windows users

Most reliable (recommended):
Outlook (classic desktop - Windows)
Best for business use and full mail control.

Modern alternative (recommended):
Mozilla Thunderbird (Windows & Mac)
Free, reliable and works very well with hosted email.

Windows 10/11 default app (with limitations):
Outlook (new app - Windows 10/11)
Microsoft's newer app. Limited manual mail settings.

Older Windows machines only:
Windows Mail (legacy)
Only for users who already have it installed.

Other popular Windows mail programs:
eM Client (Windows & Mac)
Mailbird (Windows)

Mac users

Best built-in option (recommended):
Apple Mail (Mac)
Reliable, simple and works well with hosted email.

If you use Microsoft 365:
Outlook for Mac

Free alternative (recommended):
Mozilla Thunderbird (Windows & Mac)

If you want Gmail on your desktop

Gmail as a desktop app (Windows & Mac)
Gmail can be installed as an "app" using Chrome or Edge. (Note: Gmail no longer fetches other accounts automatically.)

Privacy-focused option

Proton Mail (Web & Desktop)
Good for privacy, but works differently from traditional POP/IMAP email.

Email Management Help

How to set up and manage your email accounts

Email settings for all accounts

You can retrieve your email using your own computer, mobile device, or preferred email software. We will supply your login details so you can choose how you read your email.

The example below uses the email address your-name@your-domain.com.

Important general settings

These rules apply to almost all email programs on Windows, Mac and mobile devices:

o The username is always your full email address
o The incoming and outgoing mail server is always:
mail.serenweb.com
o SMTP (outgoing mail) authentication must be enabled
o Use the same username and password for incoming and outgoing mail

If asked about authentication type, select Password or Normal password. Do not select Microsoft, Google, OAuth or secure token login.

Recommended settings (IMAP)

IMAP is recommended if you use more than one device.

Incoming Mail Server (IMAP)
Server: mail.serenweb.com
Username: your-email@your-domain.com
Password: ******
Port: 993
Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Password

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
Server: mail.serenweb.com
Username: your-email@your-domain.com
Password: ******
Port: 465
Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Password

POP settings (alternative)

POP downloads email directly to one device and is best used on a single computer.

Incoming Mail Server (POP)
Server: mail.serenweb.com
Username: your-email@your-domain.com
Password: ******
Port: 110
Security: None
Authentication: Password

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
Server: mail.serenweb.com
Username: your-email@your-domain.com
Password: ******
Port: 587
Security: STARTTLS
Authentication: Password

If you cannot send email

If receiving works but sending fails:

o Ensure SMTP authentication is enabled
o Confirm the outgoing server is mail.serenweb.com
o Use port 587 with STARTTLS or port 465 with SSL/TLS
o Ensure the username is your full email address

If you are unsure or would like your settings checked, please contact Mike for help.

Network retrieval of mails on office-based mail server

If you have a networked office computer system with many users, we strongly urge you to invest in a mail server in-house with a competent IT professional to help you manage the mail accounts. We are happy to change the MX and A records which control delivery of mail at your domain so they are delivered straight to your office mail server. Please ask your IT technical adviser to contact us direct so we can re-configure the mail records for your web domain.
